PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC, March 29, 2023
Prusa Research company, founded by the Czech entrepreneur and tech developer Josef Prusa, introduced their long-awaited new 3D printer. The Original Prusa MK4 aims to follow up on the worldwide success of its predecessor, the MK3, which boasts more than 350.000 units sold during the last five years, and four consecutive wins of the 3D Printing Industry Awards in years 2019-2022.
The new Original Prusa MK4 inherits the tried and proven concept of the previous model but also brings many significant improvements. “It might look similar at first glance, however, in fact, we adjusted, improved, or outright replaced 90% of the parts,” says Josef Prusa, the CEO of Prusa Research. The new printer is offered for the same price as the MK3 had so far (the older model will be discounted from now on), i.e. 799 USD for the kit and 1099 USD for the assembled variant.
The complete announcement of the new Original Prusa MK4 including detailed tech specifications, photos, and videos, is available on the Prusa Research website.
You can also download high-res photos of the printer from this link.
The main new features of the MK4 are the 32-bit architecture and a color LCD screen, the option to control the printer via the internet, a new print head with easy nozzle swapping, and perhaps the most important of them all, a new sensor responsible for a perfect first layer. The quality and adhesion of the first layer are crucial factors of 3D printing - it represents the foothold for the rest of the print. While the previous printer models needed the user’s attention and some manual tweaking, the MK4 is fully automatic.
“It is another step towards making the 3D printing technology more accessible for regular users, which are not interested in tweaking and tinkering with the printer - they just want to print,” adds Josef Prusa.
The MK4 also offers a big improvement regarding print speed. The Prusa Research developer team implemented the Input Shaper and Pressure Advance technologies into the firmware, and together they bring a considerable speed increase. This is demonstrated in a video showing a sample print that would take 80 minutes on the MK3, completed on the MK4 in less than 20 minutes.
Prusa Research also announced a third generation of the MMU upgrade. When installed, it enables printing from up to 5 materials at once. Apart from other advantages, the MMU3 brings improved reliability and easier controls than the previous versions.
As always, Prusa Research also offers upgrades for their older printer models. Therefore, the owners of the MK3 can choose from three variants with different price points: they could either get just selected features or make a full upgrade to the MK4.
